As Bach did later when he was cantor of the Thomasschule in Leipzig, Carissimi, then 'maestro di Capella', had to fight the authoritarianism and encroachments of his colleagues. While Bach wrote protesting letters, Carissimi mocked the teachers of Latin by declining 'Hic, Haec, Hoc' in music.

Añado: Lógicamente Carissimi no se burlaba de los profesores de latín, sino de quienes imponían el formalismo de la antigua métrica musical a la novedad retórica barroca, donde la palabra dirige a la música y no al revés.
